Glaucoma

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma Symptoms

Glaucoma often develops without noticeable symptoms. As it progresses, it may cause:

• Gradual loss of side (peripheral) vision
• Blind spots in the field of vision
• Tunnel vision in advanced stages

Sudden severe eye pain, a red eye, blurred vision or halos around lights, especially with headache, nausea or vomiting, may indicate acute angle-closure glaucoma. Seek immediate medical attention.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the eye to the brain. It is often associated with raised eye pressure, but can also occur when eye pressure is within the normal range.

Glaucoma often has no symptoms in its early stages. Without treatment, it can gradually cause permanent vision loss, making early detection and regular eye examinations important.

Glaucoma treatment aims to lower eye pressure and slow or prevent further damage to the optic nerve. Depending on the type and severity of glaucoma, treatment may include prescription eye drops, laser treatment or surgery.

Vision already lost from glaucoma cannot be restored. Regular follow-up, eye pressure checks, visual field tests and optic nerve scans help monitor the condition. Continue prescribed eye drops as directed, even when your vision feels normal.
