What Is Dry Eye?

Dry Eye Symptoms

Common symptoms of dry eye include:

  • Dryness, burning or stinging
  • A gritty feeling, as if something is in the eye
  • Redness and irritation
  • Blurred or fluctuating vision
  • Watery eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Tired eyes, especially during reading or screen use

Symptoms may worsen with prolonged screen use, air conditioning or windy conditions.

Dry eye occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears, or when tears evaporate too quickly. This affects the tear film that keeps the surface of the eyes moist and comfortable.

Dry eye can cause irritation and fluctuating vision. An eye examination can help identify the underlying causes and guide suitable treatment.

Treatment depends on the cause and severity of dry eye. Lubricating eye drops, gels or ointments may help keep the eyes comfortable. Preservative-free drops may be recommended when frequent use is needed.

Any associated eyelid problems may also need treatment. An eye assessment can help identify contributing factors and guide a personalised treatment plan.
