What Is a Cataract?

Common Cataract Symptoms

  • Difficulty seeing at night

  • Colours appearing faded

  • Double vision in one eye

Cataract vision

A cataract develops when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, making vision appear blurred, hazy or less colourful. Most cataracts develop with ageing, although they can also occur following an eye injury or with certain medical conditions.

In the early stages, updated glasses and better lighting may help you manage cataract symptoms. When vision starts to affect daily activities such as reading or driving, cataract surgery may be recommended.

During surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The timing of surgery and choice of lens are personalised following a detailed eye assessment.
