When Should You Consider an Eyelid Procedure?

What Types of Eyelid Procedures Are Available?

Chalazion Incision and Curettage
For a persistent chalazion, a small incision is usually made on the inner surface of the eyelid to drain and remove the retained contents.

Eyelid Lump Removal or Biopsy
Depending on the type, size and location of a lump, removal or a biopsy may be recommended. Tissue may be sent for laboratory examination to confirm the diagnosis.

An eyelid procedure may be recommended for a persistent chalazion or an eyelid lump that causes discomfort, affects vision or interferes with normal eyelid function.

Not every lump requires surgery. Some chalazia improve with warm compresses and eyelid care. A lump that grows, bleeds, changes appearance or repeatedly returns should be assessed to determine whether further investigation is needed.

Please bring a list of your medications and inform the team about any allergies, blood-thinning medicines or previous eye procedures. Do not stop prescribed medication unless instructed by your treating doctor.

Follow the preparation instructions provided and arrange someone to drive you home, as an eye pad or ointment may temporarily affect your vision.

Mild swelling, bruising and discomfort may occur after an eyelid procedure and usually settle gradually. An eye pad may be applied, and ointment or eye drops may be prescribed depending on the procedure.

Keep the area clean, avoid rubbing the eye and follow the instructions given on wound care, eye makeup and contact lens use. Follow-up appointments allow Dr Nor Diyana to assess healing and discuss any laboratory results.

Seek prompt medical attention if you develop worsening pain or swelling, persistent bleeding, discharge or reduced vision.
