What Does an Eye Examination Include?

When Should You Have Your Eyes Checked?

An eye examination can help assess blurred vision, difficulty reading, frequent headaches or eye discomfort. Children who squint, sit close to screens or struggle to see the classroom board may also benefit from an assessment.

Regular eye checks are especially important if you have diabetes, a family history of glaucoma or an existing eye condition. The recommended frequency depends on your age, symptoms and individual risk factors.

Your examination begins with a discussion of your symptoms, medical history and any concerns about your vision. This is followed by checks of your eyesight and eye health.

Depending on your needs, the assessment may include a glasses prescription check, eye pressure measurement, slit-lamp examination and a dilated examination of the retina and optic nerve.

Please bring your current glasses, a list of medications and any previous eye reports. Dilating drops may be used to widen your pupils so the doctor can examine the retina and optic nerve more thoroughly. These drops may cause blurred near vision and sensitivity to light for a few hours, so consider bringing sunglasses and arranging someone to drive you home.
