What Are Eyelid Conditions?

Eyelid Condition Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending on the condition and may include:

  • A lump or swelling on the eyelid

  • Redness, tenderness or discomfort

  • Itchy, flaky or crusty eyelid edges

  • Watery eyes or a gritty sensation

  • Eyelids turning inwards or outwards

  • Drooping eyelids or difficulty opening the eye

Seek urgent eye assessment if you develop sudden eyelid drooping, reduced vision, severe eye pain, or rapidly worsening swelling with fever.

Eyelid conditions affect the skin, glands or position of the eyelids. They may cause lumps, swelling, irritation or changes in how the eyelids open and close.

Common conditions include styes, chalazia (blocked oil glands), blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid edges), and eyelids that turn inwards or outwards. An eye assessment can help identify the cause and guide appropriate treatment.

Treatment depends on the cause. Warm compresses and gentle eyelid cleaning may help with blocked oil glands and blepharitis. Lubricating eye drops may relieve irritation, while antibiotics may be prescribed when needed for infection.

Persistent eyelid lumps may require a minor procedure. Eyelids that turn inwards or outwards, or drooping eyelids affecting vision, may require surgery following assessment. Avoid squeezing or puncturing eyelid lumps.
